The family of Mayci Breaux, who was shot and killed in the July 23 shooting at the Grand Theatre, will be in New Iberia next Monday to speak at an annual Voice for Victims Rally.

The rally, put on by victim support group Voices of Innocent Citizens Empowered, will take place at 6 p.m. in Bouligny Plaza in downtown New Iberia.

VOICE president Catalene Theriot said the group works to help victims of crime navigate the court system as well as provide emotional support. Representatives from various victim services agencies in the area will also be there to answer questions as well.

“We are here for victims and their families,”  Theriot said. “They’re not alone.”

St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert, Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry and 16th Judicial District Attorney Bo Duhe are also scheduled to speak at the rally.

Breaux was shot and killed inside a screening room at the Grand Theatre July 23 by John Russel Houser, who stood up from his seat during a showing of the movie “Trainwreck” and opened fire, killing Breaux and 33-year-old Jillian Johnson and injuring nine others before killing himself.

In its 13th year, the rally is a part of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. VOICE meets every third Wednesday at the Iberia Parish Courthouse.
