UPDATE: Officials have ruled the fire accidental. LFD spokesperson Alton Trahan said:
“The owner was utilizing a heating device, designed to warm water, in a plastic container and forgot the appliance plugged. Once the water evaporated, the heating appliance ignited that plastic container and eventually the floor carpeting and other combustible items.”
Firefighters with the Lafayette Fire Department are currently on the scene of a major house fire in the 200 block of Friendship Street.
LFD spokesperson Alton Trahan told KLFY the fire has been put out and no residents were home when it started.
No injuries were reported. Officials have not released the cause of the fire but Trahan did confirm the house did suffer “heavy fire damage.”
