KALB – Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana – According to Avoyelles Parish Sheriff Doug Anderson, former Evergreen police chief, Charles Mayeux, Jr., was arrested Tuesday and charged with the March 21, 2015 death of his wife, Shelly St. Romain Mayeux.

Sheriff Anderson said that about 2 a.m. on March 21st Mayeux called the Avoyelles 911 Center reporting that the couple’s home on Cottage Street was on fire.

Local fire, EMS and police responded to the residence.

The remains of Mrs. Mayeux were later found within the charred home by firemen.

The initial fire scene investigation conducted by State Fire Marshall’s found suspicious circumstances.

A.P.S.O Detectives were notified and conducted additional crime scene anaylsis.

The results of the information gathered at that time caused Sheriff’s investigators to open an active investigation into the death of Shelly Mayeux.

As a result of the joint investigation, evidence was presented to a judge of the 12th Judicial District Court who issued an arrest warrant for Mayeux, charging him with one count of 2nd Degree Murder and one count of Aggravated Arson in the March 21st death of his wife.

An additional arrest warrant for Mayeux was issued, charging him with six counts of malfeasance in office and six counts of theft.

It is alleged that between the years of 2013 and 2014, while serving in his official capacity as Evergreen police chief, Mayeux misappropriated public funds by falsifying gas purchase records.

He is accused of converting the proceeds from these purchases to his personal use.

Mayeux was arrested without incident and booked into the Avoyelles Sheriff’s Office Detention Center #1, charged with 2nd Degree Murder, Aggravated Arson, Malfeasance in Office and Theft.

His bond is set at $350,000.
