The knockout round on NBC’s “The Voice“ lived up to its title for Travis Ewing of Lafayette. But Monday night’s episode served as a springboard to the next round for Abbeville’s Koryn Hawthorne.
Hawthorne advanced to live playoffs and Ewing was knocked out of the singing competition. The live playoffs begin in April.
In Monday’s knockout round, singers were paired against teammates. But they selected and performed individual songs while the competing singer waited and watched.
Hawthorne, 16, wowed judges with a rendition of Pink’s “Try.” But team coach Christina Aguilera chose to save her opponent, Kimberly Nichole, who rocked the crowd with the Sting hit, “Set Them Free.”
Aguilera immediately begged the judges to steal Hawthorne. Pharrell Williams answered to keep the Abbeville singer alive on the show.
“Pharrell got himself a really good artist when he used his steal,” said fellow coach and country star Blake Shelton. “His team is definitely a threat.
“I thought about pushing my button. But I know Koryn is at home with somebody like Pharrell.”
Hawthorne was thrilled to remain on the show and Williams was happy to have her.
“I’ve already worked with one of the greats, Christina Aguilera,” said Hawthorne. “Now I’m going to work with one of the other greatest greats, Pharrell Williams.”
“I’m overjoyed to have you on my team,” said Williams. “I don’t have anyone like you. There’s so much we can do. You’re special.”
Ewing was eliminated Monday after a battle with country and soul singer Meghan Linsey. Ewing sang Gavin DeGraw’s “I Don’t Want to Be” and drew praise from the judges.
But Linsey had a rousing rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel) Like A Natural Woman” that brought Pharrell Williams to his feet.
Judges had compliments for Ewing. But Blake Shelton chose Linsey to advance to the next round.
Ewing was available for other coaches to steal, but was not picked.
“Thanks so much all of you for your kind words,” said Ewing. “It’s amazing to hear that from the likes of you guys.”
“I know I’m not done with music,” added Ewing. “This is what I’m going to do for a very long time.”
