Honda Financial Services said beginning Thursday it will correct double charges the company made to some Honda owners for their April payments.

The company acknowledged the problem in a Facebook post and said they are trying to resolve it.

Customers on Twitter and Facebook were complaining the double-charge had caused their bank accounts to go into overdraft.

On Wednesday evening,  Honda said in a statement that “Any fees caused by this error will be waived or reimbursed, and we will assist customers with credit concerns.”

Liz Vesper, of Cincinnati, made her payment a few days ago and because she was early, she called Honda Financial Services to be clear the early payment was a one-time occurrence.

“I won’t be doing that again,” she said.

The payment was subtracted from her bank account Tuesday, but when she checked her account this morning, there was a pending withdrawal for the same amount. Vesper began making phone calls – around 15 of them – to the company. No luck.

“As soon as I saw my account this morning, the first thing I did was call. Thirty seconds of dead silence, then what would be the old-school busy phone,” she said.

Vesper reached out to her dealer who told her the company emailed and was having a technical meltdown. She was upset that the company didn’t get the word out to panicked customers more promptly, and when they did, it was via social media. She has yet to receive an email.

“I understand there is a lot going on with them running around and surveying the damage, but to wait four hours to get the message out could’ve saved their phone lines,” Vesper said. “The way they’re responding to people is not personable.”

Some customers commenting on the Facebook page claimed they’ve had the payment withdrawn up to seven times. Vesper said she’s fortunate she had a little extra money in her bank account this month so she was not overdrawn. However, her bank is a small regional bank, and they can’t cancel the pending withdrawal. It would cost her $35 to stop the payment.

Efforts to contact Honda were unsuccessful because the lines were flooded. Hondafinancial.com put a statement on its front page that did not seem to address the double-charge issue, saying that payments in “pending” status would be processed within 2-3 days and no late fees would be assessed.
