BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) – The West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office says that an inmate that was accidentally released from the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center on Thursday is now back in custody.
Deputies say that Emmanuel Jones was picked up from his home in Covington by his probation officer Friday afternoon.
Jones was assigned to Elayn Hunt Correctional Center (EHCC) serving a sentence for a conviction of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Jones had a pending charge of simple escape from West Baton Rouge from a December 2015 incident while assigned to the Transitional Work Program. He was booked on a simple escape charge on January 13, 2016 and a detainer was subsequently sent to Elayn Hunt Correctional Center with that information.
Jones had a release date of January 28, 2016. However, because of the detainer and pending escape charge, he should be been turned over to West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office on that date instead of being released from DOC custody to the supervision.
Jones’ release is under investigation. However, from preliminary information gathered Friday, it appears that EHCC staff had information that should have prevented Jones from being released from custody. He should have been released to the detainer from West Baton Rouge.
Once the review is complete, the Department will take necessary and appropriate disciplinary action.
