During Thursday’s New Orleans City Council meeting, council members unanimously voted to declare Allen Toussaint’s birthday — January 14 — as Allen Toussaint Day in the city of New Orleans.
Toussaint passed away November 20, 2015 while on tour in Spain.
Members of Toussaint’s family attended the January 7 council meeting when the resolution to declare January 14 as Allen Toussaint Day was discussed.
Councilmember Guidry said artists and musicians from New Orleans are ambassadors for the city. “Their travels share that culture with countless individuals and communities and their successes and creations infuse our city with a vibrancy and soul unmatched elsewhere in the world,” Guidry said.
“Allen served our city as one of our finest ambassadors.”
