JEANERETTE, La. (KLFY) – A memorial is being held tonight for Officer Juandre Gilliam who died in the line of duty last year.

The service will take place at 6 p.m. tonight at the Jeanerette Police Department.

Officer Gilliam was attempting to conduct a traffic stop on April 7, 2015, but the suspects fled and it turned into a high-speed pursuit.

Gilliam’s vehicle overturned and he died from his injuries.

Tonight family and friends are getting together to honor the 22-year-old officer who died while trying to make the city’s streets safer.

And organizers of the vigil say it’s a reminder that law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to serve and protect.
