The family of an inmate who died in the Iberia Parish Jail six years ago is happy now that a judge has ruled that excessive force led to the death of Michael Jones, 43 of Abbeville.
The family’s attorney, Jarvis Claiborne of Opelousas says a judge recently ruled one of the deputies used excessive force. “Wilda Jones, mother of Mike Jones, says she is happy that Judge DeMahy found Wesley Hayes partially liable. She now wants state and federal criminal charges brought against Jesse Hayes, Wesley Hayes and Warden Frank Ellis for the choking death of her mentally ill son,” says Jones. Claiborne explains Jones suffered from both bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
In 2009, Jones reportedly exited his cell and lunged at two officers and warden. A struggle ensued which ended with jones dead. Claiborne confirms Sheriff Louis Ackal intends to have the FBI investigate. Claiborne adds the FBI, U.S. Attorney and Attorney General were informed 6 years ago. “Nothing have been heard from them. If Sheriff Ackal can get them to investigate during this election year, the Jones family will not complain,” states Claiborne.
