LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Members of the St. Martinville Newcomers Club are claiming a victory in federal court.

Federal Judge Rebecca Doherty ruled that the St. Martinville City Council, mayor, and the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office violated the club’s first amendment right to assemble.

Newcomers Club President Janise Anthony issued a statement saying “People think we lost but we did exactly what we set out to do.”

The parade, was scheduled for Sunday is still cancelled.

But Anthony says it will roll again in the years to come under a new set of laws that must be fair and not burdensome.

Members of the Newcomers Parade will participate in the Baldwin Parade on Saturday, February 6, 2016.
