Louisiana residents who have flood insurance will soon have to pay more to protect their homes and businesses.

Flood insurance is going up because of the Flood Insurance Affordability Act. Some types of property will be hit harder than others. Property owners will get letters in the mail and the surcharge is $25 a year for a primary residence, but it’s $250 a year for any rentals, businesses, and for people who have severe repetitive losses. Those property owners could also see a 25% rate increase as well. Insurance agents say clients are confused and want answers.

This federal mandate hopes to keep the national flood program afloat. A letter needs to be sent back by the deadline and if you don’t you’ll automatically get the $250 surcharge.
