LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) – The Lafayette Parish School Board will consider on Wednesday seeking legislative relief from the impact of sharing about $929,000 in local tax dollars dedicated for teacher salaries with charter schools.

The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/1vS5oZf ) the district is required by state law to pay the charter schools the $929,000 out of $27.5 million generated by a 2002 dedicated sales tax.

The problem is that in 2002 when the tax was approved, the district promised voters all of the money generated by the tax would be given to the district’s teachers to supplement their salaries.

The board will consider a resolution that calls on state Sen. Page Cortez to draft legislation that would provide some type of financial relief from having to share dedicated tax revenues with charter schools.
