The UFC is headed back to New Orleans in June, and one of Louisiana’s native sons is set for the card.
Daniel Cormier (15-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC), from Lafayette, will meet Ryan Bader (19-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) in a light heavyweight bout at UFC Fight Night 68. The fight was announced on Wednesday’s edition of “UFC Tonight” on FOX Sports 1.
UFC Fight Night 68 takes place June 6 at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. The main card will air on FOX Sports 1. The UFC most recently visited New Orleans in September 2011 for an event at Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
Cormier will fight for the first time since a light heavyweight title loss to champion Jon Jones, a “Fight of the Night” winner at UFC 182 in January. Prior to that, Cormier was unbeaten with wins over Frank Mir, Roy Nelson, Patrick Cummins and Dan Henderson in the UFC after moving over from Strikeforce.
Bader, the Season 8 winner of “The Ultimate Fighter,” is on the second best streak of his UFC career with four straight wins, all by decision. After starting his career 12-0 with five straight wins in the UFC, he hit a rough patch with four losses in seven fights. But since a TKO loss to Glover Teixeira in September 2013, he has rattled off wins over Anthony Perosh, Rafael Cavalcante, Ovince Saint Preux and, most recently, Phil Davis at UFC on FOX 14 in January.
