On May 1, 2015 at approximately 8:21 p.m. the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Department responded to the 100 block of Crip Lane following a report of a disturbance.
Police say after an initial investigation, deputies proceeded to the 1600 block of Ridge Road to question a suspect allegedly involved in the disturbance when deputies were confronted by the suspect who was armed with a shotgun forcing deputies to defend themselves. 54 year old Jesse J. Champagne suffered gunshot wounds to his lower body and was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Investigators say Champagne faces criminal charges of indecent behavior with juveniles, simple assault and disturbing the peace.
Police say the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative per department policy pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Department is receiving assistance with this investigation from Louisiana State Police.
