In about two weeks the city of Lafayette will be under the surveillance of the police department. Thinking about committing a crime? You may want to think twice because you could be on camera.

The Lafayette Police Department will be placing crime cameras throughout the city of Lafayette.

Corporal Paul Mouton says residents can expect to see the cameras soon.

“Those cameras will be going up and activated in April of this year, and then we should have the whole project completed by September of this year and all cameras will be up and running.”

Corporal Mouton says cameras will be placed in 52 locations, specifically in high crime areas.

“We are going to set those cameras in those areas to hopefully one, deter crime but second help solve or capture things on the camera to assist our investigators in solving crimes that occur in those particular areas.”

The placement of the cameras Corporal Mouton tells KLFY’s Carly Laing, will be decided using crime stats.

“We follow statistics on a weekly bases, so what we are going to do is look at those statistics over a year period and try to identify those particular parts of town that are having the most problems with crime and quality of life issues.”

KLFY went to speak to residents about how they feel about the cameras being put up, and one Lafayette resident tells us she likes the idea.

“I think it’s an excellent idea. I think it will help lower crime rates everywhere.”

In addition to the cameras, Corporal Mouton tells KLFY that the police department is also ordering 40 body cameras for officers to wear, body cameras are expected to be in use by the summer.
