Lafayette Police have made an arrest in connection with the shooting of a teen and her stepfather earlier this month in Baton Rouge.

Police say Quintin Thomas is accused of shooting and killing 18-year-old Idalis Smith and injuring her 34-year-old stepfather. Investigators in Lafayette said once they were told Thomas could be in their area they sent a crime prevention unit out to search the area he was supposedly in. Police say they spotted Thomas walking a dog, and took him into custody without incident.

Baton Rouge Police said the two victims were found shot at 1305 North 30th Street on March 20. Police said Smith was dead when they arrived, but her stepfather was in critical condition. Investigators said they believe someone shot both victims then fled the scene before police arrived.

Police said Thomas was positively identified as the shooter on Monday, and detectives with the Violent Crimes Unit brought Guillory in for questioning.

Police charged Thomas with first degree murder. He was transported back to Baton Rouge on Tuesday from Lafayette.
