Members of the Louisiana House have agreed to raise taxes on alcohol to help with the state’s budget.

Friday, the alcohol tax hike failed to get the 70 votes needed to pass. After two days of negotiations, the bill was advanced to the Senate Sunday night after a 76-25 vote.

Efforts to add a three-year expiration on the tax hike were rejected.

Supporters of the bill say that taxes haven’t been raised in decades and money from them could help eliminate the need for deep cuts to higher education and healthcare.

Opponents of the bill believe that the raised taxed rates could put the state out of line with neighboring states.

The alcohol tax hike is one of several measures being considered to stabilize the state’s budget before the end of special session on Wednesday.
