LAFAYETTE, La (KLFY) – Acadiana Park is known for having a nice, family friendly atmosphere, but a recent shooting has some residents on high alert.

“It was kind of shocking. It’s a pretty quiet, it’s usually a very quiet, quiet area,” said park visitor, Rashell Hultquist.

The park has been known as being pretty quiet until last Sunday when Lafayette Police say at least one gunshot rang out at Acadiana Park around 3:30 p.m., hitting a 17-year-old male in the side. The shooting comes as a surprise to residents and local law enforcement.

“This is the second or third time that I’ve been here with a large group. We’ve never had any issues in the past,” said Hultquist.

“There’s usually very little complaints out there,” said Lafayette Police Cpl. Nicole Oakes. “We don’t receive a lot of reports of any criminal activity out there.”

Since the shooting two arrests have been made, but police are still on the hunt for one more suspect. So far 17-year-old Kearick Joe and a juvenile have been arrested. Both are charged with attempted second-degree murder.

The third suspect, 17-year-old Hunter Lawrence, remains on the loose and should be considered armed and dangerous.

Cpl. Oakes said they are being proactive and bringing in extra security to the park to make sure nothing like this happens again.

“When we get something like this where the criminal activity takes a spike for whatever reason, then we pay attention to it,” said Cpl. Oakes. “We want all of our citizens to feel safe.”

Cpl. Oakes said they will also bring in a surveillance truck to film everything that goes on at the park this weekend.

If you have any information on Sunday’s shooting, Lafayette Police ask that you come forward with that information.
