Some changes are coming to the dress code for Lafayette Parish public high school students.
Students will be allowed to wear khaki or navy shorts, pants or skirts.
The students’ shirts will depend on their school colors.
For Acadiana High, that will be hunter green.
Students at Carencro High and Comeaux High will wear navy tops.
High school students at the David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy will wear royal blue shirts.
Lafayette High students will wear black shirts, and Northside High students will wear red shirts.
Local high school principals said they wanted the shirt color options limited because of safety concerns. High school students can currently wear one of three shirt colors.
“We’ve had incidents where students from other campuses visit a campus during the day, and it was hard to identify who should be there,” said Steve Fruge, the district’s supervisor of child welfare and attendance. “Principals told us they wanted one color top to identify their students.”
Fruge also was part of a committee of teachers, parents and school staff who make the recommendation.
Joe Craig, the district’s chief administrative officer and former Comeaux High principal, said having students wear only one color will be beneficial.
“It limits the variation you see on campus,” Craig said.
The board approved the change on a 8-1 vote, with board member Tehmi Chassion voting against. Chassion said he thought students who wanted to go to another campus would simply put on that school’s color shirt.
The changes go into effect at the start of the new school year in August. There were no changes to the district’s dress codes for elementary and middle school students.
