Mayor Pro Tem Mark Landry will serve as acting mayor of Loreauville until the Board of Aldermen can nominate an interim mayor.

Mayor Al Broussard died in an automobile accident last week. His fiancée, Phyllis Savoy, who’s also the town clerk, was also in the accident. She remains in the hospital.

The board made the decision during an emergency meeting Monday. State law allows 20 days for town officials to appoint a new mayor while Landry serves in an interim post. If the board does not make a choice within that time, the governor would select the mayor because there were more than 18 months left in Mayor Broussard’s term.

Loreauville will hold a special election on October 24th.
