Whether it’s the classic sparkler or something that packs a little more punch, there’s a right way to pop fireworks when celebrating the 4th of July.

A few reminders before you stock up on roman candles and bottle rockets. Fireworks must be purchased from a liscensed seller.  It’s also illegal to pop fireworks within the Lafayette city limits.

Corporal Paul Mouton says “I recommend that you check with your local municipality whether its Scott, Broussard or one of the other cities to determine if you can. If you’re going to pop fireworks we ask that you do it safely adult supervision is a must typically we tell people to have a large bucket of water nearby.”

Barbara Singleton, owner of Fireworks World has at least 50 years of experience selling fireworks.  She has a few tips of her own for staying safe and getting the best bang for your buck. “Always read the directions every we sell now has a warning on it  says do not hold in hand shoots sparks or flaming balls it says use only under close adult supervision tell the kids what it’s going to do beforehand write the articles down in the order you want to shoot them tear the papers off the top and always locate the fuse every one of them you have to have a flat surface for… plywood or something and you get a bigger and better display.”

Singleton has seen a lot of firework displays, but her favorite? “I’d have to say the patriotic display. I fell in love with that red white and blue.”
