The top seed and 10th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball team will meet No.2 seed and 23rd-ranked South Alabama at 2 p.m., on Friday, May 8 in the winner’s bracket final of the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Softball Tournament here at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
The winner of the Cajuns-Jaguars matchup advances to Saturday’s 1 p.m., championship game. The loser would have to turn around at play an elimination game at 5 p.m., against either ULM or Georgia State.
The game will be broadcast on SportsRadio ESPN 1420-AM in the Lafayette area with Steve Peloquin and Bobby Neveaux on the call. It will also be televised via internet stream on WatchESPN.com with links available at championship central on SunBeltSports.org.
No. 10 Louisiana (38-8) used a 10-2 (6 inn.) win over Georgia State (37-21) while No. 23 South Alabama (36-10) topped ULM (30-21) 6-2 on Thursday to setup the matchup on Friday.
UL and USA meet in the Sun Belt Tournament for the sixth time with the Jaguars holding a 3-2 edge. The Cajuns won the 2015 season series 2-1 in Mobile, Ala., and lead the all-time series 21-10.
The two teams met in last season’s winner’s bracket final on May 9, 2014, at Lamson Park in Lafayette with South Alabama winning 4-2 in eight innings. The Cajuns fought off elimination and defeated the Jaguars the next day in the championship game by a 4-1 count.
The 10th-ranked Ragin’ Cajuns, who picked up the program’s 13th regular season SBC championship in the league’s 15th season of regular season play with a sweep of ULM last weekend, seek to win the conference tournament for the second consecutive season and 13th time in the 16-year history of the event.
