UPDATE: The 11 car train derailment in Scott left many without a place to go Wednesday.
Residents in a half-mile radius from the site were evacuated around noon. Mayor Purvis Morrison says his main concern was safety.
Evacuaees were sent to the Scott Event Center, where the Red Cross provided drinks and snacks.
Timothy Hicks was one of the residents evacuated and says given the circumstances, the evacuation went smoothly.
Lashanda Lovings has six children and says her biggest struggle was getting her children home from school.
Residents were relieved to hear they would be provided with a place a stay.
Timothy Hicks said “We’re getting a motel or hotel room. I’m going to be reunited with my little puppy dog and they are paying for it and it’s fine.”
