BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – Louisiana lawmakers won’t be returning to Baton Rouge this month to consider overriding Gov. Bobby Jindal’s vetoes of bills passed in the last legislative session.

As expected, the veto session was canceled by state senators. It takes a majority vote of either the House or Senate to scrap the session.

Vote tallies were released Friday morning.

Twenty-six of 39 senators turned in ballots by the Thursday midnight deadline to stop the gathering, according to the Senate. The House didn’t turn in enough ballots to cancel the session.

Jindal vetoed nine bills and stripped items from the budget. A rejected 1.5 pension hike for retired state employees and public school teachers drew the most public criticism.

Lawmakers haven’t held a veto session since the current constitution was enacted four decades ago.
