If your smoke alarm is constantly chirping, it might be time to change the battery. This is something that you do not want to put off.

“More often than not when we find a fire fatality, there are no smoke detectors in the house,” Eunice Fire Chief Michael Arnold tells KLFY’s Carly Laing.

With colder weather here, some are using space heaters and heating blankets to stay warm. While these items can come in handy on chilly nights, they also come with a big responsibility, “If that heater is close, over enough time, it will combust and you will have a fire,”

The Eunice Fire Chief reminds residents to keep these safety tips in mind when using space heaters, space blankets, and other warming items, “The word implies space. They have to have space around them. Two to three feet of space from anything that inflammable. Unattended is definitely a no-no”

The Fire Chief also stresses the importance of having a working smoke alarm, because they can save your life, “They have saved more lives than we can count”

Experts recommend that smoke alarm batteries should be changed twice a year, and should be checked at least once a month, “They have a test button on them and you push the button and make sure it makes the noise it’s supposed to make.”

The Fire Chief recommends the batteries be changed during daylights savings time.

When purchasing a smoke alarm, experts also recommend looking for a UL logo, meaning the alarm has been certified by Underwriters Laboratories.
