By law, public school buses cannot be used for more than 25 years, with several buses in the St. Martin Parish fleet closing in on that number, they’re doing what they can to stay ahead of the curve.
If planning went all as planned, the St. Martin Parish School system would purchase up to six new buses each school year. Due to shortcomings in the past, they’re hoping to get approved for twelve in 2015, one of them will be for twelve brand new buses, ten regular, and two for special needs students. The idea of new buses is a topic that parents in the parish are in support of.
Jessica McDonald, who has a young child who rides a bus to Breaux Bridge Primary, says a climate controlled ride is a main concern.
In addition to heating and air, director of operations, Allen Blanchard says reliable transportation is “key” for day to day activity.
