KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The 14-year-old girl injured in the Kalamazoo shooting spree has reached another milestone.
A Wednesday update to Abigail Kopf’s GoFundMe page states that she opened her eyes and recognized her parents Tuesday night.
“Abbie reached another milestone! Mom and Dad reported last night: ‘She looked at us tonight. Her right eye is too swollen yet, but she managed to open her eyes and recognized us.’”
The update on the GoFundMe site went on to read: “Your love and incredible outpouring of support keeps us going.”
On Tuesday, Abigail was upgraded from serious to fair condition.
Abigail was among the eight people shot in the shooting spree. Also wounded was25-year-old Tiana Carruthers, who was the first to be shot. She was upgraded to fair condition Tuesday night and is expected to be released from the hospital soon, according to Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas. Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller said she has started rehabilitation.
Authorities say that over the course of nearly five hours on Feb. 20, 45-year-old Jason Dalton opened fire at three locations: Meadows Townhomes in Richland Township, Seelye Kia Ford Dealership in Kalamazoo and the Cracker Barrel in Texas Township.
Seventeen-year-old Tyler Smith, 53-year-old Richard Smith, 62-year-old Mary Lou Nye, 60-year-old Mary Jo Nye, 74-year-old Dorothy Brown and 68-year-old Barbara Hawthorne were killed.
