KENNER, La. – A severe storm that ripped through the metro area spawned a tornado that caused damage on Third Street in Kenner.
The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down in Kenner early Tuesday.
“Fortunately, there have been no reports of any injuries sustained by this storm,” said Kenner Mayor Mike Yenni. “It’s amazing that nobody driving down the street got hit with the roof that blew across the street.”
Alexandra Cranford has the forecast for Tuesday, May 26.
A strong line of storms that cut power to more than 15,000 homes in Orleans and Jefferson parishes and that closed the Causeway for about 45 minutes, also sent some strong winds to the Kenner area.
The Causeway reopened around 5:15 a.m.
Heavy winds caused some damage to four buildings in Rivertown about 4 a.m., Kenner officials reported. The buildings included the Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts, 325 Minor St. and the Southeast Telecom, Inc., at 2005 3rd St.
The most serious damage appeared to be sustained at Southeast Telecom, where the front portion of the roof came off.
