Tropical Storm Bill has made landfall at Matagorda Island.  The storm has max winds of about 60 mph as it made landfall early Tuesday morning, bringing bands of heavy rain to the Texas coast. The storm made landfall close to Matagorda Bay around 11:30 a.m., about 30 miles east of Port O’ Connor.

“As of 10:30 a.m. the storm was located 125 miles southwest of Houston, which is pretty far away,” said KHOU 11 Meteorologist Brooks Garner. “And in the last hour or so we’ve seen it turn even farther west. Hopefully a lot of the rain associated with this will be pulled farther west as well.”

The Houston area, being on the east side of the storm, will continue to see see gusty winds and scattered downpours throughout the afternoon. Street flooding will be the biggest threats, although most of the heavy rain appears to be fast-moving.

Some low-lying frontage roads were covered in high water during the morning commute Tuesday, and most area schools canceled summer classes for the day.

At a morning press conference, the Harris County Office of Emergency Management warned residents to not “let their guard down.” Southeast Texas won’t be out of the woods until late Wednesday.

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for all of the Houston area until 6 p.m. Wednesday.
