In the grand scheme of things, there are more important games than Kentucky-Georgia. But the biggest story of the season has been the Wildcats’ chase for perfection, and this game could be the difference.
Best game — Kentucky (-10) at Georgia; 9 ET, ESPN: For Georgia to win this game, it’s going to take a poor performance from Kentucky in conjunction with a great performance from the Bulldogs. And to be fair, this game was probably much more imposing on the Wildcats’ schedule before Georgia dropped back-to-back home games to Auburn and South Carolina. But this is the type of team that I think could catch Kentucky on the wrong night. Guys like Kenny gaines, J.J. Frazier and Nemanja Djurisic can catch fire from deep, and they play fairly solid perimeter defense to slow down the Wildcats’ guards. Obviously, I’m not going to be as bold as to predict a loss to a 19-9 team. But this one could be a game the whole way.
Second-best game — Iowa at Indiana (-2); 7 ET, ESPN: This is probably the most important game of the night, given that both of these teams need wins to stay away from the bubble. Jerry Palm has both listed as 7-seeds in his most recent bracket projection, which means that neither team would fall out of the field with a loss. I’d probably say this one is more important for Iowa, given that the Hawkeyes don’t have another chance for a quality win in the regular season. Lose this and then drop the first game in the Big Ten Tournament? That could be a problem for them come seeding time.
Another to watch — Georgetown at Butler (-3); 7 ET, FS1: Both of these teams are safely in the field as of right now, and both could really use a win for seeding purposes. Butler is pretty solidly on track for a 4/5-seed, which would be an incredible accomplishment given where they were projected to finish in the preseason. Georgetown is also on track for a solid 6-seed per Palm’s bracket. The Hoyas have played a top-10 schedule nationally, and could really use another quality win to go with the big Villanova win on its resume. Should be a really fun game.
Matchup of the night — Devin Williams vs. Kansas frontcourt: I held the West Virginia-Kansas game out of the top-three games of the night due to Mountaineer injury questions. Juwan Staten and Gary Browne are both day-to-day, and may not play against the Jayhawks. Plus, the Jayhawks have already clinched a share of the Big-12, meaning their intensity level may not be as high as anticipated. However, one battle worth watching will be the one inside, as Devin Williams is an absolute monster inside, and the Jayhawks don’t have anyone that can match him on the boards without Cliff Alexander in the picture. He could be poised for a huge night unless Perry Ellis, Jamari Traylor and Landen Lucas can box out.
Potential upset: Two huge bubble games on tap on Tuesday, as Ole Miss has to travel to Alabama to take on the Crimson Tide and North Carolina State has to go to Clemson to take on the Tigers. Neither of those places are particularly easy assignment for a bubble team, and my guess is that we see one of them fall on Tuesday.
Pick of the night — Maryland -9 at Rutgers: Rutgers’ last four home games: a 20-point loss to Michigan State, a 19-point loss to Ohio State, a 10-point loss to Purdue, and a 30-point loss to Indiana. Even though Maryland has had a tendency to play down to its competition level in recent weeks, I’ll ride with the Terps getting a double-digit win.Other games:
- Another massive game on Tuesday could decide the Atlantic-10, as Rhode Island travels to Dayton to take on the Flyers. Whoever wins this one will have a leg up in the conference title race, although Davidson profiles somewhat well to win both of its conference games. Plus, both teams are on the bubble and could use a win for their at-large profile.
- North Carolina faces a somewhat tricky game at Georgia Tech, a team that is a bit better than its 3-14 conference record. The Yellow Jackets haven’t lost a home game by more than five points this season, and really gave Louisville all it could handle last week.
- The Atlantic Sun tournament kicks off, with Florida-Gulf Coast and North Florida both in action. Those two look headed for a collision in the title game.
- Michigan travels to Northwestern, which is more fun than it sounds given that the Wildcats have won four out of five.
- Texas A&M seriously needs to avoid a loss on the road to Florida in order to shore up its NCAA Tournament hopes. The Gators are currently No. 84 in the RPI, which means this would legitimately be a bad loss.
- Finally, the last game of the night is Villanova at Creighton. Gonzaga’s loss has put the Wildcats on track for a No. 1 seed, so I’d expect Jay Wright’s group to consolidate that with a win in this one.
