UPDATE: At 6:36 Tuesday morning, Lafayette firefighters responded to a buidling fire at the Popeyes Restaurant located in the 6800 block of Johnston Street.
Authorities say an employee arrived for work and called 911 after noticing heavy smoke in the building.
When firefighters arrived, they say the fire was quickly extinguished but not before it caused heavy damage to the dining, storage and the kitchen areas of the business.
Video cameras inside the restaurant indicated that the fire started around 3:00 a.m. in a trash can in the storage area. Authorities say the plastic trash container was used to discard old oily rags.
The fire has been ruled an accident.
ORIGINAL: The Lafayette Fire Department has contained a fire that broke out early this morning at the Popeye’s on the 6800 block of Johnston street.
It happened around 6:30 am this morning.
No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
