A vigil in Church Point was held in honor of a man found dead with multiple gunshot wounds. The fatal shooting happened February 1st at the intersection of North Main and Sunrise Streets. On Wednesday night, family and friends gathered on the bridge where his body was found.

Donald Senegal Jr. was found shot seven times on this street. Four days later, the community returns to the scene of his death to try and understand what happened.

Antonio Wheeler, Senegal Jr.’s cousin says, “Youngsters these days feel like they a man if they have a gun. Like, they really think being hard and being in the streets that makes them a man and no, that’s not it.”

In this crowd of over 100 people were council members, police officers, Senegal’s brothers, sisters, wife and two daughters.

Wheeler says, “She’s two years old and won’t know her father over some dumb stuff. How do you keep his memory alive for her? If she asks, we’ll tell her. They have pictures, they have stories, and they have videos.”

The family told stories describing Senegal as an athlete.

Laquitita Senegal Jr.’s sister says, “He ranked four in boxing in the whole world, he was a pretty good child, really trying to turn his life around, took care of his family and he didn’t deserve that.”

The family says the 26-year-old laid in the streets for an hour before anyone could reach him. Police were able to identify a suspect and capture him in a little over 48 hours.

Donald Gotch (19) was arrested for Senegal’s murder. No motive has yet been established.
