On video, the ATV zips by in seconds. What unfolded for Officer John Bourque, in the moment, seemingly lasted much longer.

“When I pulled myself up, we were looking eye to eye, he didn’t say anything, I didn’t say anything,” Bourque explained.

According to Metro Police, those eyes belong to 30-year-old Walter Moss, the man driving that ATV Saturday, in downtown Nashville.  When U.S. Marshals took him into custody Wednesday, in Springfield, Moss’ expression finally spoke for the suspect.

“It’s kind of makes me angry that these guys say, we don’t care what the law is, we don’t care about anyone else but ourselves,” says Bourque.

Officer Bourque thanked the city for its support, speaking publicly for the first time since the incident, reliving what he was fortunate to survive.

“My thought was how do I get off of here, it was not to arrest the guy or tackle him off of it,” Bourque says. “I didn’t have time, that would’ve been way too difficult to perform, it’s not a movie, it’s real life.”

Originally, Bourque says he was going after another rider who swiped a car in traffic. In the process, police say, Moss collided with Bourque, gunned the throttle and eventually launched the 22 -year veteran into a steel barricade.

“I don’t think they’re out there to hurt an officer, it seems like they just want to take over the streets because they can, because they’re a large group,” he says.

As Bourque puts it, daring anyone to stop them.

Walter Moss has a prior arrest record in Nashville which dates back to 2010. He’ll face six new charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer, reckless endangerment and evading arrest.

Metro police said at least 50 tips came in via Crime Stoppers prior to Moss’ arrest.
