WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – KSN News spoke exclusively with the Rice County sheriff who was shot in the leg this week

On Wednesday afternoon, the couple was in Wichita visiting the undersheriff who remains hospitalized.

Sheriff Bryant Evans is doing much better. He was able to walk outside and meet KSN News for an interview. 

For both him and his wife, Angela, this has been an emotional and difficult week. 

Today, the couple is grateful for each other and to support Undersheriff Chad Murphy, who they say is doing much better.

It was on Monday, Sheriff Evans tells KSN News he was at an event when he heard Undersheriff Murphy call out over the radio that he had been shot.

Sheriff Evans jumped into action, stating it was his training that kicked in, knowing they had to secure at least two different scenes.

Soon after Evans arrived at the second scene, the shooting started. That’s when he realized he had been shot.

“I looked down at my leg, and I go ‘I’m shot,’ but I have a job to do, and I continue to do my job. I told dispatch that I was shot, [and] notified there were shots being fired,” said Sheriff Bryant Evans.

“It is unnerving because you are trying to stay positive. But, you also don’t know how severe the injury is at the wound,” said Angela Evans, his wife.

The Rice County Undersheriff is currently in serious condition, and the prognosis for his recovery is good.
