MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — The young man who was flung off the I-10 Bayway bridge late Saturday night recalls the terror he felt the moments after he landed in the Mobile Bay.

20-year-old Damion Wright fell 16 feet from the top of the Bayway, and he says he still can’t believe he survived that fall. 

“Every time I close my eyes, I keep having flashbacks,” said Wright.

Wright was driving east towards Daphne on the I-10 Bayway with Tiarra Ansley and their son, two-month-old Keegan when their car started having trouble. 

“The engine just shut off and all of the lights turned off, so we couldn’t even use our hazard lights,” said Wright. 

They pulled into the emergency lane on the left side of the Bayway, and Wright went under the hood.

“I was reconnecting my battery, I heard a loud boom, and I wound up falling over the bridge,” said Wright.

Another car had crashed into the back of their car. 

“It happened so fast, I got out and checked the baby. And then I got out the car, and he wasn’t there, and I was freaking out, I checked under the car and he wasn’t there, I checked over the bridge, he wasn’t there,” said Ansley.

For several minutes, Ansley was terrified.

“I was thinking the worst could have happened, that he was dead somewhere. I didn’t know exactly what happened,” said Ansley. 

Meanwhile, Wright was disoriented.

“I heard the loud boom, and I completely blacked out. When I came to, I was underwater,” said Wright. He continued, “I was trying to figure out what happened if I was dreaming, what was going on.”

Wright somehow managed to survive, with only minor cuts and bruises.

“Glad, just glad that we all made it out, that they don’t have any scratches, no long term injuries,” said Wright. 

Both Ansley and Wright say they no longer want to drive on the Bayway after the accident.
