SMITH COUNTY, Miss (WJTV) – A Smith County family was inside their mobile home when it caught fire Easter morning, they tell WJTV if it wasn’t for their beloved cat they may not have made it out in time.

Morgan Wilson was outside of their home and her husband Harold was inside laying in bed, “I don’t even know how to handle it…or even try to process it…it’s a nightmare I wish someone would wake me up from.”

Harold says when he was in bed he heard a familiar cry, “he meowed in my face it was not a normal meow it was like a panic…it was more like get up you gotta get out…”

That panicked meow came from their cat Smokey, ” I looked at him and I saw the fear in his eyes like something’s wrong.”

Harold believes Smokey was warning him of the fire. Moments later he jumped out of bed and frantically searched for Morgan. They were both able to escape unharmed, but Smokey wasn’t able to escape the flames. Without him, though, Harold believes he wouldn’t have made it out alive.

The family lost 5 of their beloved pets. Morgan buried each of those animals in their backyard, but one, in particular, will hold a special place in each of their hearts.
