RIO de JANEIRO, Brazil (WWLP) – Athletes from the U.S. and several other countries arrived in Rio de Janeiro Sunday.
American athletes and those from other countries streamed through the international arrivals area at the airport in Rio. Sunday has seen the highest number of arrivals so far.
While the opening ceremony takes place on Friday, August fifth, preliminary soccer matches will start before then, with the women’s tournament opening on Wednesday and the men’s on Thursday.
Carli Lloyd, United States volleyball player, said, “We know that Brazil is an amazing country for volleyball, so we’re really excited to be here and to experience it with them, and hopefully with the fans too, and with the people of Brazil. We worked really hard to be here, so we’re excited to compete.”
Other countries whose athletes arrived in Rio Sunday include South Korea, Croatia, Finland, Japan, France, China, Italy, Estonia and Venezuela.
