Three days removed from a hit that injured New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, head coach Sean Payton had little to say about the health of Brees’ shoulder and whether he would play this Sunday in Carolina.
Brees offered a few more details later in the day, saying, “I didn’t throw today,” after the team’s practice, but added, “I have ever intention in playing.” He confirmed that his did, indeed, suffered a bruised rotator cuff.
When asked about Brees’ bruised rotator cuff earlier, Payton said the quarterback was “day-to-day. We’ll include it in our injury list.”
Brees said something similar when he met with the media a few hours later.
“From an injury standpoint there is nothing I’m going to say at all other than it’ll be day-to-day and we’ll see how he’s progressing, and we’ll be smart,” Payton said during his weekly teleconference with media.
Payton declined to comment on the number of repetitions backup quarterback Luke McCown would get in practice. “I’m not going to discuss hypotheticals on a Wednesday,” Payton told the media.
Renowned surgeon James Andrews examined an MRI of the quarterback’s shoulder and told Brees he does not have a rotator cuff tear but a bruise, and he can potentially play “fairly soon.”
“I don’t want to miss a game,” Brees said, “…but this is one of those injuries where you have to be smart.”
