On Tuesday night, Ragin’ Cajuns coach Mark Hudspeth joked that he wasn’t going give up the name of his starting quarterback for 2015 just because UL’s first opponent of the season — Kentucky — had.

On Wednesday afternoon, however, he did shed a smidgen of light on how the Cajun QB battle is shaping up.

Hudspeth earlier said the fight that at the start of preseason camp had Brooks Haack, Jalen Nixon and Jordan Davis vying for the No. 1 job had been trimmed from three to two — but he did not specify which two remained in the running.

Asked Wednesday how much his third QB worked with UL’s starters during a closed scrimmage Tuesday night, Hudspeth revealed that Davis — a redshirt freshman — is the aforementioned No. 3.

For now, at least.

“Jordan went a little bit with the 1s,” Hudspeth said, “and, to be honest with you, he had a really good scrimmage.

“A really good scrimmage, to the point where I don’t think it might not be out of the question that he may … see some playing time at some point this year. I thought he was really sharp, stepped up and made some plays.”

Hudspeth had good things to say about Haack and Nixon too on Wednesday, and echoed comments from Tuesday that both had “really good zip on the ball.”

“I thought both quarterbacks played very efficiently,” he said. “I thought they threw the ball well, accurately.”

Hudspeth had hoped to have a starter in mind now that the second scrimmage is in the books, and on Wednesday he did say he was “a little closer to making a private decision.”

But as of the time he met with reporters Wednesday afternoon, no call had been made.

Kentucky, meanwhile, reportedly named Patrick Towles — who started last season, but had to fend off a challenge from the spring and early in the Wildcats’ camp — its No.1 QB on Monday. Asked if he’d essentially reciprocate, Hudspeth — who steadfastly has said he won’t identify his starter until UL visits Kentucky on Sept. 5 — smiled wide.

“Nope, nope, sorry, not gonna be fair in that aspect,” he said. “They’ve got too many advantages, so we’ll try to at least have one. … I don’t know if that is one, but we’re gonna at least hold onto it.”

On Wednesday, Hudspeth suggested he’d prefer to not have so much uncertainty — if, he kidded, circumstances allowed.

“I’d rather have a three-year starter coming back who was a first-year All-American,” he said. “That would be the best scenario.”

That’s not the case, though. And that leaves Haack and Nixon still competing to succeed Terrance Broadway, the ex-University of Houston QB who started for most of his three seasons playing at UL.

“Both these quarterbacks battling right now are competing awfully well, and are showing that they can lead this team,” Hudspeth said. “I’m just awfully glad that we’ve got options.”

One of the other big battles at Cajun camp, meanwhile, was expected to be at kicker.

But with Dylan Scheurich (muscle strain, back) out to date, true freshman Stevie Artigue has had to contend with only primary competitor, senior Carlos Alvarez.

Prior to the scrimmage, Hudspeth said he thought Artigue had taken “a step forward” but suggested he and Alvarez might share some duties, perhaps with Artigue handling PATs and field goals and Alvarez kickoffs.

“The difference between Stevie right now and Carlos is Stevie is getting way more height. … I mean, he hits it high, right off the bat,” Hudspeth said before the scrimmage. “There is no way anybody can block his kicks. He gets it up so quick.

“Carlos is a little better right now at kickoff, so it could be a deal where each guy has a different role. Haven’t quite decided yet. I’m gonna let them battle it out a little bit more, because Carlos is improving. He’s very accurate with his kicks. (But) he doesn’t quite get the height that Stevie gets.”

After watching scrimmage film, Hudspeth did not rule out the two sharing responsibilities and suggested Artigue might have made another small jump ahead.

“I thought Stevie Artigue had a great night (Tuesday),” he said of the Lafayette High product. “I thought he kicked the ball extremely well. He kicked off deep. He put it right where we wanted him to place the ball. I thought he showed some good poise.”

Hudspeth said having a true freshman kick off in front of 60,000 fans at Kentucky is a “legitimate concern, but added that, “I think he (Artigue) is up to the task.”

“Right now he may have a slight edge on Alvarez,” Hudspeth said. “But Alvarez is much-improved, and I think he’ll have a role this year.”
