LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)- Skilled workers have been on the decline nationally, and it’s been much the same here in Acadiana.
There is a disproportionate amount of retiring skilled works and trained skilled workers every years. That is setting up to to be a problem, considering the job openings continue to increase and the work continues.
“I think a lot of people don’t know where the options are when they get out of school,” said Ike Sagrera, a Remington College instructor.
“We need more students if you look around Lafayette. We are constantly building,” Kendrick Thompson, who is also an instructor at Remington.
Another reason for the possible shortage of skilled workers may be the fact that schools push the “college for bust” philosophy rather than presenting students with the option of trade and technical schools.
“However much money you make is what you make it out to be,” Sagrera said. “The sky is the limit.”
To be effective as a skilled worker your must be effective in customer service and time management. And of course, that foud letter word, Thompson said.
“You have to be willing to put in the work. If you are willing to do that, this place is for you.”
