The third congressional primary to represent the Republican party is heating up as two candidates have gained endorsements from two powerful political figures.
We’re still about a month from the candidate filing deadline but as of now, there are two Republicans running for that seat: incumbent Congressman Clay Higgins, and his opponent, attorney Josh Guillory.
As Congressman Higgins seeks reelection this year, it won’t be handed to him.
His opponent in the primary, Josh Guillory has garnered the support of the former mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani.
“I’m humbled. I’m honored to have Mayor Giuliani’s support For him to come down to Lafayette and throw his support behind us and build momentum, because, again, we need a voice” Guillory said.
Guillory also gained two campaign financial directors in Laura Edwards and Jennifer Leblanc, Mayor Giuliani’s girlfriend; who handled fundraising for the Higgins campaign up until this year.
Guillory said, “They’re seasoned veteran’s. I’ve learned so much from them, I’m blessed to have them as our finance chairmen. Jennifer served with Rudy during his presidential campaign, she was his chairman. They’ve kept in touch over the years. It’s natural they would have the same political views and endorse the same candidates.”
Chris Comeaux who handles press for Higgins chose not to comment on LeBlanc’s departure but in the days following Guillory gaining Giuliani’s endorsement, Congressman Higgins picked up a stamp of approval from the commander in chief.
Higgins said in a statement, he was “honored” to have President Trump’s support and says “I look forward to working with President Trump to keep America great”.
As the road to the primary continues, Mayor Giuliani will be in the Hub City Monday in support of the congress hopeful Guillory.
