UPDATE: Iberia Parish authorities are investigating a small plane crash that happened around six Tuesday evening.

The aircraft struck a carport in the 4200 block of Romero Road near LA 88.

The person who was home at the time of this accident tells News 10 how it all happened.

Richard Johnston:  “Next thing I knew, when I heard what sound like a lawnmower, I thought a lawnmower had thrown a blade and hit my truck so I came outside in the front and walked around the corner and low and behold there’s a plane sitting in the front yard.”

It was a one-seater and the pilot was taken to a local hospital.

Maj. Wendell Raborn with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office said:
“It’s a home built ultralight. Talking to people in the area it had taken off from a field fairly close to here,  gained a couple hundred feet of altitude and they said it apparently had lost all power and It came down. When it did, it struck the front of the carport on a house and landed in the front yard of this residence.”

Johnston says the pilot was transferred to a local hospital with minor injuries.

“We ran straight over there to go make sure he was alight and help him out and he said he was OK but he wasn’t sure so of course everybody was already on their way coming to help.”

The FAA and the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) will investigate.
