Hundreds of students and the extended community of the Academy of Sacred Heart will participate in a Global Day of Service.

Over 300 students, faculty, staff, parents and alums of the Academy of Sacred Heart and Berchmans Academy will complete 1000 hours of community service by the end of the day in Lafayette, Grand Coteau and Opelousas areas.

The Academy and Berchmans Academy are apart of a national and international network of Sacred Heart schools with 24 schools in the United States and Canada and over 200 internationally.

All of the schools in the network will participate in Global Day of Service. This date marks the anniversary of the day St. Philippine Duchesne opened the first Sacred Heart School in the New World, the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles, Missouri.

They will engage in a variety of service projects ranging from cemetery cleanup to nursing home visits to construction projects with Habitat Humanity and more.

The school is based on five goals that aims to prepare and inspire students to be active, informed, and responsible citizens locally, nationally and globally.

“Service doesn’t have to be this big hassle. It can be a really simple and beautiful thing and it’s really not hard. All of the service projects we’re doing is local so it can be really easy,” said Sacred Heart Junior Elise Regard.

The seniors of the Bermans Academy will be working on maintenance and repair at the Cerebral Palsy Clinic in Opelousas. “I think it’s very special just because it’s a good example from our school,” said Senior Michael Moreau.

“We’re showing other people that to do service, you don’t necessarily have to go that far out of your way. You can find a lot of things to do in your local community,” he added.

Students will be located at sites such as; Second Harvest Food Bank, United Way, Habitat for Humanity and the Desormeaux Foundation.
