NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -A third fox has died as a result of the Audubon Zoo jaguar attack that happened Saturday. That brings the number of animal deaths to nine – five alpaca, three foxes and an emu.

“We are sad to announce that Rusty, our fox who was being treated by veterinarians following the attack by our male jaguar, became critical last evening and despite best efforts, passed away this morning,” the zoo said in a news release.

The zoo was closed Saturday, but opened back up to visitors on Sunday.

Workers at the zoo said an outpouring of community support is helping the staff.

A small memorial has been started in front of the zoo.

You can share your sympathies with the animal care team at the memorial or leave a message on the zoo’s Facebook page.

Audubon Zoo officials say the roof of the jaguar’s enclosure was compromised and the animal found a way out just before 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. It was captured about an hour later.
