Much of Acadiana is under a flash flood watch until Saturday afternoon as some areas may receive more than 5 inches of rainfall over the next day.

The National Weather Service in Lake Charles issued a flash flood watch at 10 a.m. through Saturday afternoon for Lafayette, Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Jefferson Davis, St. Martin, St. Landry, St. Mary and Vermilion parishes in Acadiana.

Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop over the area Friday night and into Saturday. Rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches are possible. Some isolated local areas may receive more than 5 inches of rainfall over the next 24-36 hours.

This rainfall may quickly run off, result in flash flooding of poorly drained and low lying areas.

A flood watch has been issued for Bayou Vermilion near Carencro.

The National Weather Service said at 8 a.m. today the Vermilion River at Carencro was 15.4 feet. Flood stage is 17 feet.

Flood stage may be reached early Saturday afternoon.

At 18 feet, roads along Bayou Fuselier become impassable. These include, but at not limited to, Walnut and Green roads along the St. Martin/St. Landry parish line, and Meche Road in St. Landry Parish.

Rain is expected in the Lafayette area this afternoon and a 90 percent chance of rain is forecast for Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
