BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – The Baton Rouge Police Department announced an arrest has been made in the investigation into the abduction and murder of a Baton Rouge couple.

The suspect has been identified as Ernesto Alonso, 42, of Baton Rouge. Investigators said he was caught in Miami early Wednesday morning. According to investigators, Alonso did “odd jobs” for Denis and Suzanne Duplantier.

“This has been extremely a team work effort,” Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie said. “All agencies have been working non-stop to get to where we’re at right now.”

Authorities added he will be extradited back to Baton Rouge and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree kidnapping.

Investigators are still looking for a possible accomplice.

The missing Baton Rouge couple was found dead in the backseat of a pickup truck at a truck stop near I-12 in Hammond, according to police. Officials said the initial autopsy revealed the Duplantiers were strangled. However, officials still don’t know where the murders took place.

The Duplantiers were last heard from Sunday afternoon and their bodies were found Monday night. The Hammond Police Department reported surveillance video from the gas station revealed two suspects and a white Chevy truck with the license plate C-287533.

According to investigators, detectives received information a possible suspect had fled the scene and was headed to Miami in a white Chevy truck. They added detectives flew to Miami late Tuesday night and Alonso was later arrested. Officials said the vehicle was recovered when Alonso was arrested.

Baton Rouge police said a safe in the couple’s home was found opened, but there has not been any speculation as to motive.Copyright 2015 WAFB. All rights reserved.
