One of the nation’s most popular children’s authors and illustrators is coming to Lafayette.

Marc Brown will visit Broadmoor Elementary on Oct. 5, then stop at the Lafayette Public Library’s main branch at 6:30 p.m. that evening.

Brown is the creator of the best-selling “Arthur” book series, which has sold millions of copies around the world and served as the basis for a PBS show of the same name.

Brown frequently travels the country, visiting schools and libraries. With this knowledge, the Broadmoor Parent-Teacher Organization began an effort to bring him to Lafayette.

“As the PTO, we’re trying to more giving back and enrichment for students,” said parent Courtney Neidetcher, president of the Broadmoor PTO. “We do fundraising throughout the year, and we have a big group of parents who are very involved in the school. We just wanted to focus more on enrichment in the classroom.”

At Broadmoor, Brown will give two presentations for different grade levels, Neidetcher said. He is expected to speak about his life on a farm, the writing process and how he comes up with stories. Neidetcher said Brown also will do an illustration, and children will draw a zoo animal as a group. The artwork will be displayed throughout the school.

In addition, the PTO is purchasing one of Brown’s books for each Broadmoor student.

“We wanted each students to have something tangible they could take home,” Neidetcher said. “The teachers will teach different lessons related to the books, depending on the grade level. Marc Brown is an AR (Accelerated Reader) author, so they can really embrace the curriculum around it.”

Neidetcher said the parents and teachers are excited to bring someone of Brown’s caliber to the school.

“We work very hard as a group to make our school better, so this is just a great way to give back and let all the kids have a great experience,” she said.

According to the library’s website, Brown’s presentation there will be called “The Aardvark Was My Warm-Up Act” and Brown will talk about “the world Arthur opened up for him.” The main library is at 301 Congress Street in downtown Lafayette. Brown’s presentation will be in the second floor meeting room.
