WELLSVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) – Vandals hit the Immaculate Conception, United Methodist and Covenant Presbyterian churches in Wellsville, spray painting their property with satanic symbols.

The Immaculate Conception Church closed its doors five years ago, but vandals defaced a statue of the Virgin Mary outside. Former members are in disbelief.

“Well, it’s disgusting. I mean, that’s the Virgin Mary there, it’s a very nice statue,” Carl Payne said.

The face was covered in black paint, and an upside down cross was painted on the body.

“I think it’s awful. I can’t believe that someone would stoop that low after everybody in Wellsville knows what we’ve been through with this church, and they just hit us again. I can’t believe it,” Lane Vinton said.

Tom Brophey, a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception, says when he saw the statue, he was sick to his stomach.

“I’m on my way to go get a tarp to cover that now, because it’s so sacrilegious to see it,” he said. “Very disheartening that someone would stoop to this level to not only vandalize our church, but the other two churches that were vandalized here in Wellsville.”

The sign for the new Wellsville United Methodist church is covered in upside down crosses. The pastor says he does not want to comment, but is disappointed.

A door to Covenant Presbyterian church had the word “Satan” painted on it. The church already worked to cover it up, but remnants of the marks can still be seen.

“The cops are investigating. I’m hoping that someone will step forward and say, own up to the fact that they did some damage to the area churches,” Brophy said.

According to Wellsville Police, a report will be written up on Monday.
