The trial or at least the selection of a jury was supposed to begin but due to a full docket on Monday, the honorable Judge Edward Rubin made a couple changes.
Seth Fontenot along with family members and legal counsel sat before Judge Edward Rubin on Monday morning with the idea that trial would finally begin, more than two years after the incident.
Here’s a timeline of events:
- In February of 2013, Seth Fontenot admitted he fired three shots at a truck’s tailgate and was arrested for murder.
- Eleven days later he was indicted by a grand jury on one count of first degree murder and two counts of attempted first degree murder.
- On October 31st of 2014, Fontenot offered to plead guilty to negligent homicide.
The most recent activity we’ve seen with this case was the unsealing of court documents in late February of this 2015. One of the files showed a photo of Fontenot allegedly holding a baby and the same gun used in the shooting. There’s also a text message where he was asked if he could really shoot someone and his response was, “if I caught them breaking into my truck, probably so.”
Trial was set to begin Monday March 16th.
Both counsels argued preliminary motions on Monday afternoon, but just after 11 am, Judge Rubin released witnesses and ordered them to return to the courtroom Wednesday morning. He also postponed the selection of jury members until Tuesday at 9 am.
