BATON ROUGE, La. (KFLY)  Governor John Bel Edwards has ordered that United States Flags and Louisiana State flags be flown at half-staff over the State Capitol, authorities said.

The flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on September 2 to honor the life of St. John the Baptist Fire Department District Chief Spencer Chauvin.

District Chief Chauvin lost his life in the line of duty while responding to a tragic charter bus accident on I-10 near LaPlace on August 28.

The crash injured more than 40 people when according to State Police, the bus struck a fire truck and multiple other vehicles at the scene of a single-car accident from earlier in the morning.

“By all accounts, District Chief Chauvin was a courageous hero who never missed an opportunity to save a life or have the back of one of his fellow first responders,” said Gov. Edwards. “He was an example of what it means to serve your community with integrity and honor. Donna and I are keeping his family and friends in our prayers as they mourn the loss of a man who will always be remembered as a hero.”
